The Insiders’ Club (Strangers in Crime)

By David P. Warren

Attorney Scott Winslow and investigator Lee Henry are doing what they do best in Book 4 or the Scott Winslow Legal Mysteries.

The elite of the brokerage industry has devised a way to trade on non-public information that leaves no trail. A coalition of strangers who transfer critical information before it becomes public, and they do it without leaving a trace. A way to profit from inside information that provides no way to connect the dots.

Broker Assistant Kathy Jenkins, a six-year brokerage employee with an outstanding performance history, overhears an after-hours telephone conversation between her broker boss, Jessica Martin, and someone unknown. She hears Jessica talking about an acquisition announcement that the market knows nothing about. Kathy is distressed by the implications of the call and after serious consideration, decides she must confront her boss, hoping for an explanation. Jessica’s reaction is to fire Kathy.

Kathy hires experienced employment lawyer Scott Winslow to pursue a wrongful termination case. Scott hires Lee Henry, a former CIA agent turned investigator, who will do what it takes to find evidence, often through unconventional means. Lee Henry’s investigation begins to uncover information about the ingenious group of experienced brokers who leave no paper or electronic trail. They deal in inside information that is conveyed by people who don’t work together in brief, verbal exchanges at out-of-the-way places, leaving no trails for SEC investigators to follow.

Jessica has been making money at an incredible pace and she has it deposited in accounts all over town. She is euphoric about the success of this project, until her colleagues in the association start being murdered, execution style. After the second execution, the remaining association members begin to live in terror, suspecting that they will be next, and they are desperately seeking some way out of what looks to be inevitable.

As Scott Winslow builds the wrongful termination case against Jessica and her brokerage house, Lee Henry builds an insider trading case against the clandestine association that may put some of the most prominent and influential brokers in the country in federal prison. As each member of the association over whether they will be the next to be executed, Lee Henry devises a plan to catch the killer before others are executed and uses Jessica as bait to bring him out in the open.

The unexpected lies around every corner and the temptation that called to the association members led them into a world of fear and panic, as they try to survive one more day.

Between Dreams and Nightmares

By David P. Warren

A character driven story of an affair, murder, blackmail, and an all-in search for big money that can’t be found.

On her fortieth birthday, Amanda Harmon sits in a small interview room, nervously awaiting the arrival of detectives. Amanda recently discovered that her husband Brian was cheating on her two years after begging forgiveness for his last affair. Depressed and angry, she planned to end her long-term marriage. After Amanda confronts Brian about the affair he is murdered, and so is the other woman. Detectives are looking at suspects in both killings and Amanda looks like she might have a pretty good motive.

Amanda’s close friend Barbara went to confront the other woman and found her lying on the floor in her living room. When she tried to assist the woman, Barbara was taken captive by the woman’s husband inside the house. And her captor has now gone missing as well.

Brian Harmon was an experienced lawyer who cut corners to make money. Ethics were never his priority and at the time of his death he faced upcoming hearings on client complaints to the California State Bar Association. He was an opportunist who pushed all limits, and in the weeks preceding his death, his representation of a judge brought him critical information and the opportunity to blackmail a U. S. Senator. After numerous threatening exchanges, the Senator arranged for payment of the money Brian demanded for his silence. The FBI were positioned and waiting for the perpetrator when he was planned to pick up the money at the drop-site, but in an ingenious manner, he managed to evade them. Brian was on the run from the FBI and an operative who moved around in the shadows. Now Brian has been killed, most of the money is missing, and Brian has taken the secret of its whereabouts to his grave.

Police detectives are working to determine who killed Brian and who killed Carmen Miller, who was having an affair with Brian, and it seems that they were not killed by the same person. Amanda and one of her two close friends, Barbara, are witnesses who can send two killers to prison, and the people being hunted for the death of Brian Harmon and his love interest know that Amanda and Barbara have seen what can never be revealed. They must make sure both Amanda and Barbara are unavailable to testify at trial.

How did Brian get the Senator to turn over two million dollars? How did he manage to move that money as FBI agents closed in on the drop sight? And where did the money go? The FBI and covert operatives are all looking for the missing money and some in pursuit are prepared to step out of bounds to get there.

Who can be trusted? Who can survive? Expect the unexpected and get ready for a wild ride.
